E-Cooling

E-Cooling is a piece of equipment that represents additional heat sinks added into the engine. Engine cores sized 275 or larger can fit E-Cooling up to their limit (see table below). Any suitably sized fusion core can mount any E-Cooling up to its limit or any E-Cooling that fit in smaller brackets, but can't exceed it's allowed size (e.g. the 300 core can mount an E-Cooling +1 or E-Cooling +2, but can't mount a +3 because the engine lacks the space for the extra heat sink). Anything smaller than a 275 engine core cannot mount E-Cooling.

Core Size E-Cooling
>275 None
275-295 +1
300-320 +2
325-345 +3
350-370 +4

Heat Controller (S)

Essentially a complex computer-aided system for mech heat control developed by the Sanctuary Worlds to cope with the high heat of some of their weapons, the Heat Controller functions to manage heat generation during prolonged combat. Thanks to the controller, as well as the Sanctuary's native heat sink system, Sanctuary mechs often have excellent heat management. Interestingly, unlike similar Inner Sphere systems, the Heat Controller's effects can be stacked together, as long as it is used with Sanctuary heat sink systems. Requires the 'Mech to be fitted with a SDHS Kit in order for you to install them.

Manufacturer: Generic
Tonnage: 1
Critical Slots: 1
Install Location: Any
Value: 160,000
Gear ID: Gear_HeatSink_Heat_Controller

Heat Exchanger Efficiency

In a heat neutral biome (Highlands/Lowlands) the equivalent weight of double heat sinks are more efficient cooling per ton than heat exchangers until the amount of heat generated becomes greater than 120 at which point it's more efficient to fit the exchangers (e.g. a 'Mech producing 110 heat in a Highlands biome will get more value out of 2 double heat sinks than it will fitting an exchanger). As the tonnage and effectiveness of exchangers scales linearly this is true regardless of what type of exchanger you have. What this means is, as a rule of thumb if it produces more than 120 heat adding an exchanger will be beneficial in the majority of biomes (6 out of 9).

The table below lists the amount of heat in each biome you need to be generating in a 'Mech in order for exchangers to be more efficient than the equivalent weight of DHS and therefore worth fitting. Depending on how much space you have available, in colder biomes (especially Polar) where heat sinks become even more efficient it might actually be worth removing the exchangers from your 'Mechs in favour of more sinks.

Biome Heat Effect Heat Threshold
Lunar +35% >78
Martian +25% >90
Badlands +15% >102
Desert +15% >102
Highlands 0% >120
Lowlands 0% >120
Jungle -10% >132
Tundra -15% >138
Polar -20% >144

Heat Sink Kit (Laser)

Converts a SHS engine to Laser Heat Sinks (LHS).

Cooling System provides heat dissipation for components inside the mech and compatible extension points for additional heat sinks throughout the mech. It differs from the closed cooling system of the engine. Unlike a normal heat sink which uses radiators and heat-conductive fluids to cool a 'Mech, a laser heat sink uses lasers to excite the hot exhaust gasses to a higher-energy state, converting the infrared energy of the gasses to light which is then shunted out of the 'Mech via a series of highly polished surfaces. The lack of liquid and gas in the system means that laser heat sinks don't get the decreased performance on warmer worlds that single and double heat sinks have, while at the same time preventing laser heat sinks from taking advantage of immersion in water or colder weather to boost their performance. Laser heat sinks are slightly less efficient than normal double heat sinks but the environmental benefits lead to them remaining an experimental technology instead of being abandoned.

Heat Sink Double (S)

In their isolation, the Sanctuary Worlds iterated upon the technologies of the Inner Sphere, learning and evolving their combat technologies over the long centuries. The Sanctuary Worlder's heat sinks are less powerful than the Inner Sphere's double heat sinks (though more powerful than standard heat sinks, a technology that they did retain) though they are similar to Clan double heat sinks in compactness. However, the Sanctuary Worlds developed multiple kinds of heat sinks that all link to the same master kits, giving them flexibility in their cooling options that the Inner Sphere and even the Clans cannot match. Requires the 'Mech to be fitted with a SDHS Kit in order for you to install them.

Manufacturer: Sanctuary Engineering
Tonnage: 1
Critical Slots: 2
Install Location: Any
Value: 150,000

Heat Sink Prototype Double-Strength

These Prototype Double Heat Sinks were created by House Davion researchers. Unlike the Double Heat Sinks used by the Star League and after the War of 3039 these prototype units were smaller. As an experiment, they worked adequately, but their use of liquid heavy metals instead of the safer (if larger) radiators used in SLDF double heat sinks meant that they have been highly unstable. Requires the 'Mech to be fitted with a Proto DHS Kit in order for you to install them. WARNING: VOLATILE - explodes if critically hit.

Manufacturer: Friden
Tonnage: 1
Critical Slots: 1
Install Location: Any
Value: 200,000
Gear ID: Gear_HeatSink_Prototype_Double

Equipped Effects:

  • -6 heat per turn

Critical Effects:

  • CRITICAL HIT: Explodes for 25 damage, 12 heat damage, 10 stability damage. Destroys the heat sink
  • DESTROYED: Equipped effects disabled

Laser Heat Sink

Similar to a Clan-spec double heat sink, the lack of liquid and gas in the system reduces the chances of heat-based ammunition cook-off and means that laser heat sinks don't get the decreased performance on warmer worlds that single and double heat sinks have, while at the same time preventing laser heat sinks from taking advantage of immersion in water or colder weather to boost their performance. Laser heat sinks are slightly less efficient than normal double heat sinks but the environmental benefits and the fact that they're slightly easier to produce lead to them remaining an experimental technology instead of being abandoned. Requires the 'Mech to be fitted with a Laser Heat Sink Kit in order for you to install them.

Manufacturer: Clan
Tonnage: 1
Critical Slots: 2
Install Location: Any
Value: 930,000
Gear ID: Gear_HeatSink_Generic_Laser_Clan

Equipped Effects:

  • -5 heat per turn regardless of biome heat

Critical Effects:

  • DESTROYED: Equipped effects disabled

Mini Heat Sink

This is a Miniature Heat Sink. It works on the same basic principles as a standard heat sink does and serves the same basic purpose: to vent waste heat from BattleMech activity. However, the Mini Heat Sink gives up a lot of effectiveness from its heavier brethren and thus is only minorly effective, testing the MechWarrior adage that any heat sinking is better than no heat sinking. Mini Heat Sinks can be added into a 'Mech regardless of what heat sink kit it is using.

Manufacturer: GM
Tonnage: 0.5
Critical Slots: 1
Install Location: Any
Value: 50,000
Gear ID: Gear_HeatSink_Mini

Equipped Effects:

  • -1 heat per turn

Critical Effects:

  • DESTROYED: Equipped effects disabled

Heat Sink Freezer (D)

Freezer Heat Sinks are a Late Succession Wars experiment to create the old Star League-era Double Heat Sinks. The Freezer has better overall performance than the Double Heat Sink, cooling 8 heat per turn. However they cannot be engine-mounted (meaning there are no Freezer Heat Sink Kits) and can only be mounted on 'Mechs equipped with a Single Heat Sink Kit, due to engineering limitations. Freezer Heat Sinks can only be added as external sinks into a 'Mech if it has a SHS Kit.

Manufacturer: NAIS
Tonnage: 1
Critical Slots: 3
Install Location: Any
Value: 200,000
Gear ID: Gear_HeatSink_Prototype_Freezer

Equipped Effects:

  • -8 heat per turn

Critical Effects:

  • DESTROYED: Equipped effects disabled

3rd Gen. Heat Sink

3rd Gen. Heat Sinks provide the same cooling as Double Heat Sinks but with none of their added bulk as they only take up one critical slot. 3rd Gen. Heat Sinks are the final form of the heat sink, with all the power of Doubles but no drawbacks. Requires the 'Mech to be fitted with a 3GHS Kit in order for you to install them. 3rd Gen. Heat Sinks are Community Content gear.

Manufacturer: St. Ives
Tonnage: 1
Critical Slots: 1
Install Location: Any
Value: 200,000
Gear ID: Gear_HeatSink_3rdGen_Double

Equipped Effects:

  • -6 heat per turn

Critical Effects:

  • DESTROYED: Equipped effects disabled

Heat Banks

Heat Banks are installed to allow for more thermal energy venting. However, where standard heat sinks rely on coolants (which have varied effectiveness in different environments) heat banks do not. They simply collect and expel heat automatically, though only in certain increments. What this means is that, while their effect doesn't get accounted for by a mech's cooling systems, they always vent off their collected heat regardless of environments. This trait makes Heat Banks invaluable in extremely hazardous environments such as Martian or Lunar settings.

Heat Bank

Manufacturer: Generic
Tonnage: 1
Critical Slots: 2
Install Location: Any
Value: 160,000
Gear ID: Gear_HeatSink_Generic_Standard-Bank

Critical Effects:

  • DESTROYED: Equipped effects disabled

Bulk Heat Bank

Manufacturer: Generic
Tonnage: 2
Critical Slots: 4

Critical Effects:

  • DESTROYED: Equipped effects disabled

Heat Negator (S)

Essentially a complex bank of radiators and vents, the Heat Negator is a computer-aided system for mech heat control developed by the Sanctuary Worlds to cope with the high heat of some of their weapons. Thanks to the power of the Heat Negator combined with the Sanctuary's heat sink systems, Sanctuary mechs rarely suffer heat concerns in combat. Interestingly, unlike similar Inner Sphere systems, the Heat Negator's effects can be stacked together, as long as it is used with Sanctuary heat sink systems. Requires the 'Mech to be fitted with a SDHS Kit in order for you to install them.

Manufacturer: Generic
Tonnage: 1
Critical Slots: 1
