Description

The Thorn is a light BattleMech which was originally intended to operate as a scout but was too slow for true scout work. Eventually it was rebuilt in 2549 to serve as a light support platform thanks to the first-ever use of Endo-Steel and CASE on a mech. However, that variant was the THE-N. The original Thorn was the THE-F and lacked the advanced Endo-Steel and CASE of its successor design. Still, the -F was effective enough to remain in service, though not production, and served as the basis for the THE-S given to the Draconis Combine by ComStar as part of Operation Rosebud.

Description

The Thorn is a light BattleMech which was originally intended to operate as a scout but was too slow for true scout work. Eventually it was rebuilt in 2549 to serve as a light support platform thanks to the first-ever use of Endo-Steel and CASE on a mech. The Thorn carries a weapons array that is not usually seen on light 'Mechs: a LRM-5 launcher mounted in the right arm with one ton of reloads in the right torso, paired with two Medium Lasers split between the head and left arm. This lets it outclass most mechs of its size in combat.

Description

An extremely unusual variant of the Thorn, the THE-H was created to make use of recently developed technologies and to prove they had value even on the lightest of units. Clad in Ferro-Vanadium armor and powered by a heavy but highly effective Dense Engine, the -H is effective, fast, and durable. However, those benefits come at a cost and the -H has very little tonnage left for weapons after nearly maxing the armor. With only a measly three Medium Electro-Lasers to its name, the -H is only so effective in combat and often is ignored until easier targets are defeated.

Description

A mainstay of the Terran Hegemony and later the Star League, the Thorn was taken on the long journey out of the Inner Sphere by the Sanctuary Worlders. The Thorn THE-L is a surprising remix on the mech, created by a Sacellum captain who had Thorns but needed fast strikers instead of fire support. Swapping out the weapons of the THE-W and adding Ferro-Fibrous armor permitted the addition of twin DRM-4s and Medium Electro-Lasers. The DRMs are fed from half a ton of SHIELDed ammo. The -L proved popular enough to warrant wider production and proliferated out into the rest of the Sanctuary Worlds armies.

Description

Developed in 3051 on the orders of Precentor Martial Anastasius Focht to try and close the gap between the Clans and Com Guards, the factory refit THE-N1 received its baptism of fire during the Battle of Tukayyid. Having reached a similar conclusion that resulted in the THE-Nb, the CASE was dropped and the standard engine was swapped for an XL Engine to allow the standard weaponry to be stripped for an all energy weapon array: a right arm mounted Kinslaughter H-Class ER PPC and a head-mounted Intek Small Laser. This new weapons array, enhanced by double heat sinks, added a level of lethality never seen before on the Thorn.

Description

The advanced model employed by the Star League Defense Force Royal Divisions in 2743 changed the role of the 'Mech from a missile to an energy boat, replacing the LRM launcher with an ER Large Laser, retaining one medium laser and downgrading the other to a Small Laser. Dropping the no longer required CASE, the 'Mech also used a MASC system for temporary speed bursts and Double Heat Sinks to vent its increased waste heat output. The THE-Nb mounted an XL Engine to save the weight to mount this extra equipment, at the cost of reduced survivability.

Supplied by ComStar to the Draconis Combine as part of Operation Rosebud in 3035, the THE-S was a downgraded factory refit of the THE-N. Stripping out the advanced Endo Steel chassis and CASE, the use of a heavier standard chassis forced a reduction in the Thorns armor protection by half a ton, most of which was removed from the head and rear torso.

Description

A mainstay of the Terran Hegemony and later the Star League, the Thorn was taken on the long journey out of the Inner Sphere by the Sanctuary Worlders. There it found new life as a valued light mech, often used for fire support purposes. The THE-W is the base variant of the Sanctuary Thorn. Armed with a VRM-6 and twin Medium Electro-Lasers, the Thorn is dangerous up close and at range. Endo-Steel and an XL Engine pay for the kit.

Description

A mainstay of the Terran Hegemony and later the Star League, the Thorn was taken on the long journey out of the Inner Sphere by the Sanctuary Worlders. There it found new life as a valued light mech, often used for fire support purposes. The THE-W2 is a dedicated weapon-carrier design, mounting precisely one weapon: the Neutrino Projector Cannon. Though it has only one weapon, the NPC is formidable at any range and provides serious firepower for a mech of the Thorn's size.
