Apocalypse Race: There Can Be Only One!

The following is a brief summary and an explanation of what requirements you need to meet in order to get the event to fire. Further details are provided but they contain spoilers. Don't read them unless you really want to know exactly what happens in the event.

Summary:

Event #2c in the The Need For Speed event chain.

Blaze lets you know about an upcoming race.

Event Trigger Requirements:

  • The Argo is not currently traveling to a new system
  • The Argo is in a system with a terran world
  • You picked the Apocalypse Rover in the event "The Need For Speed"
  • Blaze is a member of the crew
  • Blaze is uninjured
  • You have not already completed the There Can Be Only One! race

You have a message from Blaze. Apparently we've arrived in the system just in time for a race, and she needs to know whether to sign up:

Commander, if we're going to do this race, there are a few things you need to know. This one takes place in the highlands, so we have a few options. I can push hard and drive aggressively, but we'll probably banged up pretty good on some of those rocky outcroppings and ravines. On the other hand, I can play it a bit safer and hope to make up the time in the straightaways. Like most of these races, there's also an optional "shortcut" route; this one appears to run through a dense boulder field with a lot of tight turns. Just let me know how you'd like to proceed, and I'll get things ready to go. Of course if we don't have time, I understand.

Option A - "Drive aggressively.":

The rocky trails of the highlands were no match for the rugged dependability of the Apocalypse. Although some of the other racers had faster rigs, most of them suffered from mechanical breakdowns from the rough terrain, and by the end Blaze came out ahead with a generous lead.

Result:

  • Morale increased by 1
  • Company C-Bills increased by 100,000
  • 1 race win added to season record


Option B - "Play it safe.":

Although Blaze did her best, the Apocalypse just wasn't fast enough to keep up with the other racers. Even though the rough terrain slowed the speedier racers to crawl in spots, they were able to leap back into the lead once the trail cleared, leaving Blaze in the middle of the pack.

Result:

  • 1 race loss added to season record


Option C - "Take the shortcut.":

At first glance, the shortcut through the boulder field looked like a sure bet. Unfortunately, the Apocalypse has a wide stance and a long wheelbase, and by the time you realized your mistake, Blaze had the big 6x6 wedged between two boulders and was unable to finish the race. At least the cost of the wrecker was included in the race fees...

Result:

  • Morale decreased by 1
  • Company C-Bills decreased by 100,000
  • 1 race loss added to season record


Option D - "Hold off on racing for now.":

Blaze knows that contracts are more important than racing. Besides, there are plenty of other races to run.

Result:

  • No change

Note: selecting this option does not lock you out of accepting the There Can Be Only One! race event in the future.
